What’s up, Pokemon trainers? It felt like just yesterday that Battle Styles was released, and I love the new format. Many new Pokemon online decks are seeing a play and doing well at online events, and I couldn’t be happy with the diversity at hand here. It feels like a breath of fresh air has been placed into the lungs of the Pokemon TCG, and I’m living for it. Rapid Strike Urshifu is shaping up to be the best deck in the format as expected, and it seems we’re finally starting to see a “base” list take place and develop. There’s still a lot of creativity at hand here that is yet to be explored, so I urge you to deviate from the teachings of this article today. However, if you’re looking for something proven that can and will win future events, you’ve come to the right place! Let’s dive into one of the poster boys for the newest set, Battle Styles, Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX!

I booted up my Pokemon Trading Card Game Online app, loaded up some PTCGO codes, and then traded those Pokemon online codes to trade for this deck. I was very excited, and it honestly didn’t take that many PTCGO codes to make the deck. If you’re looking to buy some codes, we sell them here on PTCGO Store, and I highly urge you to check out our competitive pricing and swift delivery! Let’s talk about Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX today.

Strategy

The strategy with RS Urshifu VMAX is highly dependent on what the opponent is playing. Still, generally, you’re going to want to setup your Urshifu VMAX by turn two and soften up/KO any opposing threats by spreading damage into them with the second attack. We can get off Urshifu’s second attack by the second turn by taking advantage of Rapid Strike Energy, a very key part of the Rapid Strike engine. Then, you can clean up by simply KOing the opponent with the first attack. You can be highly disruptive this way, or if you need to be more aggressive, you can take cheap Prize Cards by picking off support Pokemon such as Jirachi, Crobat V, or Dedenne-GX. It all depends on what point you are at in the game. However, both routes will lead you to victory.

This deck often sets up fairly quickly, and its biggest strength is to be able to OHKO multiple Pokemon at once by softening them up. You don’t need a copy of Boss’s Orders in the late game most of the time because you can just naturally setup multiple targets. You can even keep energy on your side of the board so that regardless of a Marnie, Reset Stamp, or any random other stuff, you can still have your opponent checkmated.

Key TCG Cards

Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX

4-3 Rapid Strike (RS) Urshifu VMAX - RS Urshifu VMAX is a tank to deal with, seeing as it has 330HP for the equivalent of Stage 1! This is fairly high as far as VMAX Pokemon go and puts it out of range of some 2HKOs. For one energy, we see an attack similar to that of Golisopod-GX (which was a perfect card for the time). Being able to hit 150 damage for single energy is massive, especially energy denial decks or decks that are very aggressive; low energy attacks mean we can quickly deal with threats. The second attack, G-Max Rapid Flow, can hit two Pokemon for 120 damage! This means we can wipe out Dedenne-GX, Crobat Vs, and many other bench sitters on our opponent’s side. The best part? This isn’t a GX attack – we can do this as many times as we want to in a game. All provided, we can continue to power up our RS Urshifu VMAX a second time, which should be no problem with Rapid Strike Energy. Fighting-typing on this card is immaculate as it can really prey on popular Pokemon such as Pikarom and Eternatus VMAX. Both Crobat V and Dedenne-GX are weak to Fighting as well, so the typing is amazing on this Pokemon. Psychic weakness is a bit of a fault on this card; however, we can overcome it with a Jirachi-GX.
Let’s talk about the Basic Urshifu V! Being the Basic V that will VMAX evolve into an Urshifu (RS) VMAX, it’s not going to be super flashy, but it can abuse Rapid Strike cards such as Rapid Strike Energy! This card has a nice hit and run attack for single energy, some solid HP, and a decent second attack hitting 150. This card isn’t too special at first glance, but with the in-game mechanics released and Urshifu’s Fighting-type, this V can hold its own on the field for a few turns before it evolves.

Jirachi Gx

1 Jirachi GX – This is entirely in here to remove Psychic-weakness from our titan attacker. Common threats that are Psychic-type and exist within standard include Mew and Mew TTGX, Polteageist, and Dragapult VMAX. We can’t afford to be OHKOed since we give up three Prize Cards, so instead, we can chill with one of these on our bench.

Mewtwo

1 Mewtwo – This support Pokemon is typically best combined with tech Supporter cards, such as Phoebe in our case! Cheryl would also be a great inclusion with Mewtwo. However, we don’t currently have that card in our deck. Scoop Up Net synergizes well with this card and enable us to be able to recycle our Supporter cards and have access to them in the same turn by using a drawcard such as Dedenne-GX or Crobat V, or we can use Jirachi’s Stellar Wish to select it from the top of our deck. If we ever need that specific Supporter for the next turn, or we expect our opponent to Marnie us, we can use Mewtwo’s ability at the end of our turn to ensure we draw into that key card the following turn.

Mew

1 Mew – This card is largely useful against Pikarom or opposing Rapid Strike decks that can target our bench. It is also useful against Cramorant V. This is a very key card in today’s metagame.

Galarian Zigzagoon

1 Galarian Zigzagoon – Damage counter drops are super key so that we can KO things that have 130 HP on the opponent’s bench, such as Houndoom that will be played in new SS decks. We want to be able to KO most targets in one shot, and Galarian Zigzagoon can be the difference sometimes. This card is abusable with Scoop Up Net.

GIratina

1 Giratina – Yet another card that can abuse Scoop Up Net. This one removes Special Energy from play. This is especially useful in the Eternatus matchup to remove their Weakness Guard Energy but can also be useful in other matchups to discard other miscellaneous energy (i.e., Speed Lightning Energy in Pikarom decks).

1 Phoebe – Phoebe is one of my favorite characters from the Pokemon television show, and I couldn’t be any happier that they reprinted her as a powerful card in the TCG! Phoebe lends her hand in helping our VMAX Pokemon hit through certain obstacles, namely Zamazenta Vas well as Decidueye. Both have unique abilities that give our deck a hard time, but we actually put up a fight in these matchups with this handy supporter. Sometimes the games aren’t as close as I’d like to admit; however, if there’s a small chance I can win the matchup by slotting one specific card, I’ll take those odds! Phoebe is reusable with Mewtwo and Scoop Up Net, meaning we can play up to six Phoebe in a single game!

4 Switch – These help us to reuse Jirachi’s Stellar Wish ability and also allows us to reset RS Urshifu VMAX’s Gale Thrust condition to hit for full damage. I could see us dropping one copy of Switch for one copy of Escape Rope.

4 Scoop Up Net – These serve a very similar purpose to Switch, except they can also help us clear off bench space, move a non-V/GX Pokemon out of the active position, or help us to reuse certain abilities in our deck. Both Switch and Scoop Up Net are very valuable in our deck for similar reasons.

1 Great Catcher – Great Catcher is pretty much our Dedenne-GX killer and can help us nab a free two Prize Cards at really any point in the game. It can also be powerful when we need to get a catcher effect, but we’ve already used our Supporter card for the turn (rendering us unable to play a Boss’sOrders). This card has its limitations. However, when used at key times can surely turn the tides of the game!

2 Air Balloon – More mobility cards, but we like to ideally have these on our Urshifu VMAX because we always want to pivot into Jirachi to reset Gale Thrust’s extra damage conditions. Air Balloon gives us more mobility options that stay in play unless the opponent plays a copy of Tool Jammer or ToolScrapper!

2 Martial Arts Dojo – This is the last Trainer card I want to touch on in this deck, but it’s one that packs a massive wallop! Martial Arts Dojo changes the numbers so much and allows us to 2HKO many VMAX Pokemon and OHKO many V Pokemon. It’s generally a Stadium that only favors our side of the field, so it’s usually a neutral Stadium that is safe to play down early. Sometimes I will, on purpose, give up the first Prize Card to the opponent to be able to hit harder the following turn and get a bigger knockout. This is a massive card that can change the tides of a game and swing the tempo in your favor. I want a third Dojo in here because it definitely pulls its own weight in here!

4 Rapid Strike Energy – The bread and butter of this deck! Excellent addition to our new archetype. It makes streaming attacks very simple. These are important to ensure we can G-Max Rapid Flow when we want to and if we need to attack with the V (against things like Zamazenta V or to throw off the prize trade).
