Hi everyone! I recently spoke about how Galaxy Mewtwo (or “Jit2”) has been gracing the top of the game right now and is looking to be a great choice for Player’s Cup 4 keys. Low and behold, Simon Trottier has brought forth a new level of strategy to the deck – playing it alongside Rapid StrikeUrshifu VMAX! A bit of a weird combination, Simon has engineered this Pokémon deck to take out this deck’s hardest matchups: Eternatus VMAX as well as Pikarom. Both Pokemon online decks are weak to Fighting-type, which RS Urshifu VMAX can capitalize on. Also, being able to add G-Max Rapid Flow as a useful tool to your deck is great since it is one of the best sniping attacks in the standard format! It also gives you a solid out in the Cracephalon matchup, allowing you to match their pace of taking Prize Cards. Let’s discuss one of the newest archetypes, Mewtwo & Mew Tag Team GX/Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX (“MewFu”)!

NOTE: This is a continuation of the original article posted to our blog, “The Perfectionist – Galaxy Mewtwo in Standard”. Many of the thoughts discussed here are a continuation of that. I suggest reading both to fully understand both archetypes, although some material here is sourced from that article. Enjoy!

I booted up my Pokémon Trading Card Game Online app, loaded up some PTCGO codes, and then traded those Pokémon online codes to trade for this deck. I was very excited, and it honestly didn’t take that many PTCGO codes to make the deck. If you’re looking to buy some codes, we sell them here on PTCGO Store, and I highly urge you to check out our competitive pricing and swift delivery! Today, let’s talk about Mewtwo & Mew Tag Team GX/Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX (“MewFu”).

Strategy

The best way to understand how a Mewtwo deck works are first to make sure we understand Mewtwo’s Perfection ability, which reads:

“This Pokémon can use the attacks of any Pokémon-GX or Pokémon-EX on your Bench or in your discard pile. (You still need the necessary Energy to use each attack).”

The main strategy of this Pokémon deck is to abuse Mewtwo’s Perfection ability to copy specific attacks from Pokémon either in play or your discard pile to take down the opponent’s Pokémon one-by-one. You can do this by choosing the most efficient attack or using the most appropriate typing to hit the active for weakness. We accelerate energy into play using Jirachi-GX’s Star Search, similar to how Pikarom decks will use Boltund V’s Electrify attack to throw some energy onto a Pokémon. We want to ensure a solid attack on the second/third turn and then go from there. While this Pokémon deck doesn’t have a crazy amount of energy acceleration, it is just enough to get things going and threaten a massive OHKO on the following turn.

With the recent addition of Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX, we now gain a few massive assets to our Pokémon deck:
  • A VMAX Pokémon that has very high HP and can take more hits from certain Pokémon than Mewtwo can (like a Dread End from an Eternatus VMAX).
  • A strong single energy attack in the form of Gale Thrust.
  • Fighting-typing to take on Pikarom decks and Eternatus.
  • The ability to hit two Pokémon at once with G-Max Rapid Flow.
Although it is only a 2-2 line in this deck, RS Urshifu VMAX does enough to make some poor matchups turn into strong matchups; this is the power of abusing weakness and the raw potency of Rapid Strike Urshifu. Let’s see the list that Simon pieced together.

Key TCG Cards

Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX

4-3 Rapid Strike (RS) Urshifu VMAX - RS Urshifu VMAX is a tank to deal with, seeing as it has 330HP for the equivalent of Stage 1! This is fairly high as far as VMAX Pokémon go and puts it out of range of some 2HKOs. For one energy, we see an attack similar to that of Golisopod-GX (which was a perfect card for the time). Being able to hit 150 damage for single energy is massive, especially energy denial decks or decks that are very aggressive; low energy attacks mean we can quickly deal with threats. The second attack, G-Max Rapid Flow, can hit two Pokémon for 120 damage! This means we can wipe out Dedenne-GX, Crobat V, and many other bench sitters on our opponent’s side. The best part? This isn’t a GX attack – we can do this as many times as we want to in a game. All provided, we can continue to power up our RS Urshifu VMAX a second time, which should be no problem with Rapid Strike Energy. Fighting-typing on this card is immaculate as it can really prey on popular Pokémon such as Pikarom and Eternatus VMAX. Both Crobat V and Dedenne-GX are weak to Fighting as well, so the typing is amazing on this Pokémon. Psychic weakness is a bit of a fault on this card. However, we can overcome it with a Jirachi-GX.
Let’s talk about the Basic Urshifu V! Being the Basic V that will VMAX evolve into an Urshifu (RS) VMAX, it will not be super flashy, but it can abuse Rapid Strike cards such as Rapid Strike Energy! This card has a nice hit and runs attack for single energy, some solid HP, and a decent second attack hitting for 150. This card isn’t too special at first glance, but with the in-game mechanics released and Urshifu’s Fighting-type, this V can hold its own on the field for a few turns before it evolves.

Mewtwo and Mew Gx

2 Mewtwo & Mew TTGX (“Mewtwo”) – Mewtwo is the star of this show! Only as strong as the attackers you’ll see below, Mewtwo doesn’t play around when it comes to versatility. You’ll see below why it is one of the best decks around by seeing the showcase of attacks it can copy. Choosing your GX attack for each game is something that will be a challenge, but once you play out matchups in detail, you’ll see why it’s amazing. 270HP standing tall, Psychic-typing, and a weakness to Psychic (mitigated by Jirachi-GX), Mewtwo can do it all. Don’t forget that Mewtwo has a GX attack itself in the form of Miraculous Duo, which can heal itself for so much damage. This is often a huge surprise that can cause upsets in games because people forget that Mewtwo has a GX attack all the time. Let’s hop into some of the attackers in this deck!

Garchomp and Giratina Gx

1 Garchomp & Giratina TTGX – A beast in its own right, Garchomp & Giratina has many good attacks to choose from. Sniping for 40 damage with a Linear attack is good. Calamitous Slash can deal a good chunk of damage after a Horror Energy poke can be detrimental to the opponent, and GG End GX can absolutely body certain Pokémon. This is kind of an all-purpose tool and one of our more general attackers.

Jirachi Gx

2 Jirachi-GX - The Psychic Zone ability on this Pokémon is super valuable here because it turns off our Psychic weakness (as well as our opponent’s Pokémon, keep that in mind). This is valuable against other Mewtwo decks, or perhaps an attack from a Polteageist. Star Search is an excellent form of energy acceleration that can uniquely search out and attach Special Energy cards, hence why we play a total of eight Special Energy in our deck (minus Rapid Strike Energy – these can only be attached to Urshifu in our deck).

Gengar and Mimikyu Gx

2 Gengar & Mimikyu TTGX (“Genkyu”) – Genkyu is the king of donks because of its Horror House GX attack and can really slow down opponents by preventing them from playing cards for a turn. This can be key in many MUs and swing the tempo of games, especially when followed up with a Poltergeist attack. This GX attack is one of our many common openers in many games.

Trevenant and Dusknoir Gx

1 Trevenant & Dusknoir TTGX (“Trevnoir”) – Trevnoir does a great job of stealing games against the opponent by either using Night Watch on the opponent’s hand. When combined with Marnie or Reset Stamp, it can be deadly. Pale Moon GX is also a fringe attack that can get amazing OHKOs when timed correctly or when the opponent is out of resources.

Latios Gx

1 Latios-GXLatios-GX has a unique GX attack that can disable ADP decks from using Altered Creation. We can toss it into the discard to bypass Latios' negative ability.

2 Chaotic Swell – A neutral Stadium card that can prevent Power Plant from shutting down our abilities and slow down Fire-type decks by limiting their Giant Hearth usage. Searchable via Guzma & Hala.

1 Stealthy Hood – Used to prevent Giratina’s Dimension Breach ability, Galarian Zigzagoon’s ability, and most importantly, Mimikyu’s Shadow Box ability which can shut down our entire deck. Searchable via Guzma & Hala.

1 Air Balloon – A searchable switch card that you can find with Guzma & Hala.

1 Karate Belt – Searchable via Guzma & Hala, you can get a Karate Belt, a Rapid Strike Energy, and a Stadium card to power up a G-Max Rapid Flow in a single turn! All you have to do is be behind. You can really attach this tool to Rapid Strike Urshifu at any point in the game, and as long as the opponent doesn’t KO you or play Tool Scrapper, it will stick. You can also use Karate Belt on a Mewtwo to use Garchomp & Giratina TTGX’s Calamitous Slash for one less energy, which can come in clutch. This card gives us options in the late game to clean up key Pokémon.

2 Tag Call – An Item that can help us search out our Tag Team Pokémon while also being able to search out key Tag Team Supporters.

1 Mallow & Lana – This is yet another interesting inclusion as a 1-of because it can heal a hit in the many matchups, or it can help us reset effects like Reshizard’s Flare Strike attack. Mallow & Lana is reusable alongside Eldegoss Vso that you could get the full value out of this card twice! This card works very well with Tag Call since you can search out TTGXs and TT Supporters.

1 Guzma & Hala – An extension of Tag Call, this Supporter makes it easier to search out Chaotic Swell, our Special Energy, Big Charm, and Stealthy Hood.

1 Reset Stamp – I’d really like to play two of these, as they work fantastically with our Pokémon’s durability. Reset Stamp is a resource we typically save for the late game, and when you’re spreading damage, the game is typically going to go pretty long. A staple in Mewtwo decks, this disruptive card is a mainstay. It also has synergy with Trevnoir’s Night Watch attack to potentially disrupt our opponent to a zero card hand!

4 Horror Energy – This card is one of the best buffs Psychic Pokémon have! This card is essentially Rocky Helmet and a Psychic Energy smushed together, making a great combo. Especially since we do a lot of damage with this deck, we can always take the extra damage from Horror Energy. Pro Tips: You can actually stack this card, meaning if you have two Horror Energy attached to a Mewtwo and the opponent attacks, you’ll deal 4 damage counters to their active Pokémon! Horror Energy can also put damage onto your opponent’s activity, which triggers the extra damage clause on Garchomp & Giratina TTGX. Searchable via Jirachi-GX’s Star Search.

4 Aurora Energy – An energy that allows us to attack with a wide suite of attackers. It can also discard attackers for us to strengthen our Perfection ability. Searchable via Jirachi-GX’s Star Search attack.

3 Rapid Strike Energy – These energies are extremely potent, allowing us to stream G-Max Rapid Flow attacks almost seamlessly. They can only be attached to Rapid Strike Pokémon (which means in our deck, Rapid Strike Urshifu V/VMAX). However, they’re a necessity to win the matchups that they’re in our deck to improve. It allows for versatility; we really only need two of these in a game. However, the third copy is just in case you prize one or discard one early on.

Conclusion

I’m sure you’re already running to your computer and loading up your PTCGO Codes as we speak, so I’ll let you hop to it. MewFu is one of the most up-to-date archetypes (and it could get powerful due to future threats being weak to Psychic-types as well as Fighting-types), so you might need some more PTCGO codes in order to build this deck. This Pokemon Online deck will cost a few packs considering the deck uses quite a few cards from the newest Battle Styles expansion, so why not consider getting your PTCGO codes from our website?
