Hola everybody! I’m glad to be back and writing to you about one of the newest viable pokemon online decks from the latest Fusion Strike expansion! Gracing our TCG format with new archetypes, Pokémon really shook things up with this set by releasing a new type of Pokémon in the form of Fusion Pokémon, a similar mechanic to Single Strike and Rapid Strike. Fusion Pokémon tend to interact interestingly with new cards, which will pose a fun challenge for trainers to determine which cards fit best with each other. Today, I want to go over Andrew Mahone’s Boltund VMAX deck list because it piqued my interest: Boltund V is a card that saw great success amongst the Player’s Cup series, and has generally been a strong V since its release. Now that it has a VMAX, there’s a whole new can of opportunities we can open up. Mahone (aka “TrickyGym”) created a solid foundation for this deck, and I wanted to go over it because I believe it will be the model for all Boltund lists in the future. Let’s chat about one of the decks I’m most excited for in the new expansionFusion Strike, Boltund VMAX!

Strategy

Boltund VFlaaffy

The main strategy of this deck is very simple but tried-and-true surely! We essentially want to start off by using Electrify with our Boltund V to get a bunch of Lightning Energy into play. We follow this up by getting numerous amounts of Flaaffy into play and continuing to apply pressure by getting more and more Lightning Energy into play. Are you noticing a common theme here? Eventually, by the end of the game, we should be able to OHKO a VMAX by having 10+ Lightning Energy in play, and by that point, we should have an unstoppable board state. Since we have so much energy in play, we can rotate attackers as well to avoid being KO’d by the opponent (and retain energy in play for Bolt Storm). We can also abuse the Prize Trade by using Zekrom as well as the Boltund V. This deck also has a lot of support to setup, especially with the new Evolving SkiesStadium card, Stormy Mountains. The longer the game can last, the higher the chance of winning is! Here’s a turn by turn description of what you’re going to want to do:

This deck can go first or second and be completely fine. Ideally, we would like to go first to deny our opponent the opportunity.

Turn 1: Attach energy to a Boltund V on the bench. Ideally get at least one Mareep into play. This is really all we can accomplish on the first turn of the game.

Turn 2: Evolve into Boltund VMAX and Flaaffy. Use Flaaffy’s ability to accelerate additional energy onto Boltund VMAX. Threaten a Max Bolt onto the active. Try to get additional Mareep into play if you weren’t able to on the turn prior.

Alternate T2: If you’re unable to get this setup, feel free to use Electrify with the Boltund V to get a couple of additional energy into play. You can also go this route if your opponent doesn’t have the ability to apply pressure on their next turn.

Turn 3 and Onward: Build up a board full of Lightning Energy cards and hit hard with Bolt Storm. If needed, use Zekrom and Boltund V to mix up the Prize Trade.

Key TCG Cards

Boltund V

4 Boltund V - It’s not often that I talk about the Pokémon V before the VMAX, but Boltund Vis the exception! This Pokémon might be one of the best Pokémon V to ever be a pre-evolution of a VMAX. This is our ideal starter because it can accelerate energy onto our board using Electrify, and to top it off it has the same attack as Boltund VMAX in the form of Bolt Storm. You can really off-put the Prize Trade by using two VMAXs and a V in order to force your opponent to take eight Prize Cards total! That’s the goal, anyway. 200HP on a Pokémon V isn’t too shabby, and Fighting weakness is going to be decent going into this new Fusion Strike meta - I suspect with the rise of Mew VMAX that Fighting-types will see less play by the minute. Two retreat cost isn’t the best, but the rest of this card is immaculate! Chef’s kiss.

Boltund Vmax

3 Boltund VMAX - This is where the deck sees an immense boost of strength: Boltund got a VMAX and it’s really freakin’ great! 320HP is the biggest selling point, and we’ll get into that in a moment. It has the same attack as the Boltund V - Bolt Storm - except the base damage on the VMAX is 30 damage instead of 10 damage. This can make all the difference when it comes to OHKOing VMAX Pokémon, which is so pivotal in today’s format. Boltund VMAX’s extra HP means you won’t be getting KO’d as easily as the V, which means that you’ll be able to keep energy cards in play for longer and have better control over the tempo of the game. This means that Bolt Storm will have a more stable damage output throughout the game, and have an easier time scaling higher. Alongside Flaaffy, Boltund VMAX will be able to get enough energy into play to dish out huge amounts of damage. Lightning typing is strong against Suicune V right now but not too much else. Fighting weakness remains the same as the V, and the retreat also stays the same. Boltund VMAX does gain a second attack, Max Bolt, which is quite efficient when building up energy in play. Overall this card is mostly an HP boost, but it makes a big difference in this deck!

Flaaffy

4-4 Flaaffy - Flaaffy is the backbone of this entire deck as it keeps the stream of Lightning Energy going throughout the duration of the game. Flaaffy is very reminiscent of Eelectrik from NVI; Eels was a very common term around that point of the game! The successor, Flaaffy, has seen much less play until know where we’ll see it find a home in Boltund VMAX decks. Each additional Lightning Energy in play is an extra 30 damage, so you can imagine how much damage will pile up throughout the lifespan of each Flaaffy. Flaaffy has a decent attack that can help finish off Pokémon as well.

Zekrom

1 Zekrom - Zekrom is a single Prize Pokémon in this deck aimed at throwing off the Prize Trade. Zekrom has a very unique attack where it can paralyze the opponent - this attack can be very useful to buy a turn in the middle of a close-knit game! This Pokémon is great for buying time in the early game by chipping damage off of huge VMAX Pokémon or finishing off a Pokémon later.

Stormy Mountains

3 Stormy Mountains - This Stadium card reminds me of Brooklet Hill, a Stadium card within the expanded format. It has the unique capability of searching out Lightning-type Pokémon or Dragon-type Pokémon. In our deck, we only have the capability of searching out Lightning-type Pokémon, but that’s perfectly fine! Grabbing a Boltund V or a Mareep is highly advantageous for us in the early turns. Considering that for each Flaaffy we get into play is an extra ability per turn, we applaud the usage of this Stadium. When there are no more basics to grab, this card can be useful to shuffle the cards on the bottom of your deck after a Marnie as well.

1 Path to the Peak - I’ve included a single copy of Path to the Peak in this deck in an effort to get around annoying abilities like Dark Signal on Umbreon VMAX or perhaps to shutoff the occasional Crobat V. We don’t have any Rule Box abilities in our deck beside a single copy of our own Crobat V.

3 Air Balloon - These are vital to our strategy for a few important reasons. Firstly, we want to make sure that we can get our attacker into the active slot as soon as possible. We can only attach energy to benched Pokémon using Flaaffy, so having an Air Balloon to retreat our active Pokemon with is key. Lastly, we want to rotate between our Boltund VMAXs in order to preserve energy on the board, so Air Balloons are a must in this situation as well!

3Speed Lightning Energy - Of all the “specialty” themed basic energy turned special energy, Speed Lightning Energy is easily the best! It is also in contention for one of the best Special Energy cards of all time. Being able to attach an energy card and draw two cards is a crazy unique attribute that no other card in Standard possesses. The only reason that we don’t play four of these is that they aren’t attachable via Flaaffy’s ability because they only supply Lightning Energy when attached.

11 Lightning Energy - We play a hefty amount of Lightning Energy so that we can hit high numbers with Bolt Storm. Each Energy Card is essentially 30 damage, so 11 total energy is equivalent to 330 additional damage. Once you factor in Speed Lightning and the base damage from Bolt Storm, you have a recipe for an OHKO on a VMAX!

Conclusion

This deck is one of the most snow bally decks to play in the format, and it has the opportunity to score big KOs by flooding your board with energy. If you like straightforward decks that don’t have an issue with getting energy into play, this deck is the deck for you then. This deck doesn’t require too many PTCGO codes because it only needs a few cards from the new expansion, so it’s perfect for beginners and veterans alike.
