The Ultimate Guide to Custom Formats

The Ultimate Guide to Custom Formats

In recent weeks and months, custom formats in the Pokémon TCG have become increasingly popular. They provide unique learning and playing environment unparalleled by the game's normal Standard and Expanded formats due to unique rules and restrictions. If you wish to become a better deck builder or player, custom format tournaments are the perfect opportunity to do so. In my eight years playing Pokémon competitively, I have picked up a great number of deck-building insights. Popularizing Poké Dolls and Pokégears in Lucario & Melmetal Pokémon online decks this season may be my most widely known deck-building contribution, but the unprecedented sandboxes of custom formats gave me the opportunity to innovate many more ways than discovering singular cards. Custom formats have allowed me to refine my strategies and put them to the test on a consistent basis. Reading this article will give you the ability to approach creating your own tournament-ready decks in custom formats like Journey and the Gym Leader Challenge with insights that will put you ahead of the competition!

“Rogue Fangs” - Lycanroc Claws Into Standard!

“Rogue Fangs” - Lycanroc Claws Into Standard!

Hola fellow trainers! I’ve been enjoying lots of time on vacation while competitors have been duking it out online for the top spot in grass-root tournaments and Chill TCG events alike. It’s been fun watching veteran players combat the strategies of up-and-coming rookies, both of whom have their own individual merits. I personally embrace the rogue side of things when a new set drops because it’s a bit of a shakeup to what was pre-existing around. I know there are a lot of beginner players who may not have a lot of budgets to start playing the game hyper competitively, however, today’s deck is going to go over a relatively affordable deck in the form of Lycanroc. In a world full of lots of Shadow Rider Calyrex and Eternatus, we can take advantage of those weaknesses by utilizing a Single Strike engine. Single Strike Energy is very resourceful because it can provide both Darkness and Fighting-type energy (but not both at the same time obviously). In doing so, it also provides a nice damage buff to the deck, and can be accelerated! All of the above criteria allow for us to build a pretty low maintenance, single Prize Card deck that has a decent shot at taking down the current format. That being said, I wouldn’t expect stellar results from this deck as it is not as consistent as a Tier 1 deck (such as Shadow Rider Calyrex), but it can pack a punch and take down the titans of the format often enough for me to write about it. Let’s get into the underdog of the format, Lycanroc/Houndoom!

Hey everyone my name is Gabriel Smart. I am beyond excited to begin writing for PTCGO Store! I hope everyone is having a wonderful time browsing this amazing website, and I'm happy you have stumbled upon my writing! In the next coming months, we are going to be experiencing an immense rotation that is going to completely alter this meta! Gone will be cards like Reset Stamp (Unified Minds), Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX (Cosmic Eclipse), Mewtwo & Mew-GX (Unified Minds), Dedenne-GX (Unbroken Bonds), Pikachu & Zekrom-GX (Team Up) and so much more! How we play the game, and how we deck build will be drastically altered as well! With that being said, it's time we take our vision to the horizon upon us! Let's dive into some post-rotation decks!

Top 5 Evolving Skies Cards

Top 5 Evolving Skies Cards

Evolving Skies, our newest Pokemon TCGO set, adds many fan-favorite Pokemon into the TCG and there are many new card strategies to discover. Of course, there is the mighty Rayquaza VMAX (Evolving Skies) that soars high, many “Eevee”-lution Pokemon that seem amazing, and of course many new Pokemon like Regidrago (Evolving Skies) that appear in the TCG for the first time. Arguably this is one of the craziest sets ever because it seems like a handshake between the competitive player base and the collectors in this game - many cards are competitive and would be an amazing showpiece in a collection. I love this set and I’m amped to share my personal top five cards so far! I love how this set continuously grows both the Single Strike and Rapid Strike mechanic, has some of the best art that we’ve ever seen, and even brings back Dragon Pokemon to the game! I could go on and on, but this set is absolutely amazing so let’s soar into these great cards!

Predictions for the 2022 rotation

Predictions for the 2022 rotation

What’s up guys, welcome to my first article here on the blog of PTCGO Store. I’m pleased to be part of this amazing team of writers and can’t wait to see what we will be up to in the future.

With rotation being about a month ago away and the new set Evolving Skies being released on the 27th of August, I wanted to take the time and look ahead to see what we can expect from the 2022 rotation and the future path that the Pokémon TCG will take. I want to mainly focus on the actual format, which cards or archetypes will be the most popular, and how the disappearance of certain cards from the サン & ムーン sets will change the viability of some ソード & シールド cards for the better or for worse. However, considering the world's circumstances, I also want to give some predictions concerning the continuation of real-life and online events.

First of all, I want to look at cards that we won’t see any more that will have a significant impact on our upcoming format, whether or not it might be by weakening or strengthening archetypes that will still stay around. I won’t be talking about Arceus & Dialga & Palkia GX in the upcoming part because I don’t really consider it a card that helps an archetype. Instead, I generated a couple of decks purely built around Altered Creation GX.

Reviewing New Fusion Pokémon Pt. 2

Reviewing New Fusion Pokémon Pt. 2

Hey, what’s good PTCGO Store readers? Have you read my last article on the Fusion Pokemon cards  - New Fusion Pokemon #1? If you haven’t, you totally should because this article will be showcasing some different Fusion Pokemon. These cards are similar to Single Strike and Rapid Strike Pokemon because it has a “Fusion” stamp that lets everyone know it’s “style”. These cards are releasing in Japan and we will eventually get them everywhere else later in 2021. I’m personally hyped because these cards remind me of Tag Team Pokemon mixed with SP Pokemon (yeah, I’ve been playing that long) so I have high hopes for the future of the game! While these cards aren’t out quite yet, you can still always pick up some PTCGO codes for other sets right here at PTCGO Store. On top of that, you can use code “zlesage5” to save 5% on your next order. Continuing on from my last article, let’s check out some more of these cards!

These cards are releasing soon in Japan with a tentative release date of October or November worldwide. I’ve personally been hyping these cards up to my friends and I want to share my early thoughts on them with you in this article.
